Lawyers representing former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison have recommended that she be sentenced to time served after pleading guilty to seven felony counts related to the downfall of cryptocurrency exchange FTX. Ellison's legal team cited her "extraordinary cooperation with the government, her otherwise unblemished record, and the numerous testimonials of Caroline's honesty and ethical behavior" in their filing.
The sentencing memo included claims that former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried had recommended Ellison use the amphetamine Adderall "to stave off fatigue" while working at Alameda. Personal statements from Ellison suggested that she was trying to "detox" from the drug.
Since FTX collapsed in November 2022, Ellison has focused on direct service, volunteering more than 700 hours to community organizations, as her "repeated efforts to find a paying job have been unsuccessful because of her notoriety and the uncertainty surrounding her criminal case."
The former Alameda CEO is set to return to court on September 24 for sentencing, with her lawyers arguing that she poses no risk of recidivism and that granting leniency would "promote respect for the law" in recognition of her early disclosure of the crimes, acceptance of responsibility, and extensive cooperation with the government.
