Cryptocurrency Phishing Attacks Surge on DuckDuckGo
DuckDuckGo users have fallen victim to phishing attacks, resulting in significant cryptocurrency losses after visiting fraudulent websites that impersonated Etherscan, a popular Ethereum block explorer and analytics platform. The privacy-focused search engine has been displaying these phishing websites in its search results, posing financial risks to crypto investors.
Scammers Exploit Search Algorithms to Lure Victims
Attackers try to get fraudulent phishing websites ranked on popular search engines like Google and Bing. Some use sponsored banner ads, while others attempt to trick the search algorithms to achieve organic ranking. This tactic has proven effective in luring unsuspecting victims into connecting their crypto wallets to the malicious sites.
Massive Losses from Crypto Phishing Scams
According to investigations, in August 2023, over 9,100 victims lost about $63 million to crypto phishing scams. One victim alone lost $55 million in Dai (DAI) in a phishing attack. Although the total number of victims decreased compared to 2023, the amount stolen increased by 215%, highlighting the growing sophistication and impact of these scams.
