Two Taiwanese military officers, Lieutenant Han and Captain Lin, have been indicted on charges of selling sensitive government information to mainland Chinese contacts in exchange for cryptocurrency payments. According to prosecutors, the officers received 8,151 Tether (USDT) for at least seven classified military documents, including a manual detailing Taiwan's military strategies for cyber defense.
The case highlights a growing trend of cryptocurrency-fueled espionage in the region, as the Control Yuan, Taiwan's government watchdog, reported a significant increase in recorded espionage cases over the past decade. Between 2011 and 2023, there were 40 recorded espionage cases, up from 13 cases between 2001 and 2010.
The indictment of Han and Lin comes amidst a broader resurgence in the Asian cryptocurrency market, as major exchanges prepare to reopen for business in key markets across the region. However, the Taiwan espionage scandal serves as a stark reminder of the potential security risks associated with the rapid growth of the crypto industry.
