The New York State Attorney General's office has reportedly issued subpoenas to venture capital firms Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and Union Square Ventures, which have invested in the decentralized finance (DeFi) platform Uniswap. This comes as part of a regulatory offensive against Uniswap by the Attorney General, Letitia James.

A spokesperson for Uniswap stated that the company "doesn't wish the burden of unnecessary subpoenas on anyone," but welcomed dialogue with government agencies about responsible DeFi innovation, especially in Uniswap's home state of New York. The NYAG's office and Union Square Ventures did not respond to requests for comment, while Andreessen Horowitz declined to comment.

This move by the New York Attorney General comes as U.S. regulators have been increasingly targeting the cryptocurrency sector, particularly since the collapse of FTX and other crypto firms in 2022. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had previously sent Uniswap a "Wells notice" claiming the DeFi platform was acting as an unregistered securities broker and exchange.
